Miranda en La Carraca by Arturo Michelena (1896). Located at the Collection FMN (Fundación Museos Nacionales) in Caracas, Venezuela. The subject of the painting, Francisco de Miranda (1750 – July 14, 1816) was a Venezuelan of great historical stature in both military and politics of his age. He participated in the Spanish American Wars of Independence, Napoleonic Wars as well as the French and American Revolutions and was known as "The Great Universal American" and "The First Universal Venezuelan" for his international exploits and contributions to the Age of Enlightenment. The painting depicts Miranda in his prison cell at Penal de La Carraca at Cádiz, Spain where he died in 1816.
