Bodega de Señora Paula

Ms Paula’s Grocery Store

This small corner store was founded by Ms. Paula Noriega Deguias, a neighbor from the high area of El Calvario community. Ms. Paula sold in this store groceries, ice cream, snow cones, sodas, and beer, mostly on the weekends and on El Calvario’s cultural activities and popular gatherings.

This store was closed in 2017, because of the Venezuelan economic situation. Nonetheless, the “bodega” was selected in 2018 by the community as one of their cultural highlights, because of all the memories held by this place from more than 32 years.

Ms. Paula built this tiny store next to her house when she moved to El Calvario, a low-income neighborhood that was rebuilt between 1973 and 1978, during Carlos Andres Perez presidency. In 1986 Ms. Paula renamed her store “Bodega El Rincon” and began to sell lunches, candies, and snacks for the Maria May School students, which was her main activity until she went out of business due to the Venezuelan economic crisis.

Jose “Cheo” Carvajal, an urban activist from Caracas Ciudad Laboratorio Non-Profit Organization, says that this corner store was a reference of this small community from El Hatillo Municipality (Miranda State, Greater Caracas). In this “bodega”, says Carvajal, people used to enjoy with family and friends, talking in a pleasant area of the neighborhood.
