Gruta Virgen de El Carmen

The “Virgen del Carmen” Grotto is a niche built with river stones, concrete, and adobe by the people of El Calvario town. This construction is part of the Maria May School facade. The grotto, shaped as an arch, has a wood frontispiece. The sculptures' niche has a concrete base decorated with flagstones. Its dimensions are around 1.20 x 1.80 x 1 meters (47.2 x 70.8 x 39.3 inches). An iron fence, encircled by adobe bricks, safeguard the image of the Virgin Mary in her “El Carmen” advocacy.

By the half of the XX century, people from El Calvario adopted the “Virgen del Carmen” (Carmen’ Virgin) a Marian Advocacy, as their spiritual patron for the community. On October 20, 1978, they created the El Carmen Society to do the fundraising for the commission of the sculpture and the building of the grotto.

Two years later, they finished the niche with material and labor provided by the community and had the image inside the grotto. On July 16, 1980, El Calvario had their first celebration for their Patronage, “La Virgen del Carmen”. This grotto is one of the 9 urban symbols chosen by this community. It is located on the left side of the Maria May School’s facade.
