Deep Submergence/Obstacle Avoidance Sonar Console from Submersible NR-1
Deep Submergence/Obstacle Avoidance Sonar console from submersible NR-1, in the collection of the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum. NR-1 was the U.S. Navy's first and only nuclear-powered submersible. In service from 1969 to 2008, NR-1 performed missions such as searches, recoveries, oceanographic research, geological surveys, and installation/maintenance of underwater equipment. The Deep Submergence/Obstacle Avoidance Sonar was the primary sonar system aboard NR-1. A high-resolution search sonar, it was used to detect and ascertain the position of objects during surfacing and submerged operation.
